Who Loves Guy Clarke ? Proving That Country Still Counts

A lot of rock fans will swear blind that they hate country. But without country there would be very little rock and roll.. No 50’s rockabilly (hear that hillbilly sound), no West-coast laid back Eagles, no Doobie Brothers or America, no Southern Rock.

There is, of course, such a thing as terrible country (Garth Brooks, Nicole’s huband, etc) but there are also plenty of hidden gems if you look beyond the mainstream. Intelligent musicians who pave their own way and steer well clear of cliches and sentimentality

One such gem is songwriter and singer Guy Clark, close collaborator with two other great country-tinged musicians Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt

In 2006 he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk/Americana for his album Workbench Songs and toured last year with heartland stars Joe Ely and John Hiatt and excellent country star Lyle Lovett (to good for Julia Roberts).

Here are my 5 favourite Guy Clark songs.

1. Cold Dog Soup
2. LA Freeway
3. Desperadoes Waiting for a Train
4. Boats to Build
5. Bag of Bones

Let yourself be proved wrong !
