Bob Dylan's Tell Tale Signs Release October, 7, 2008

Tell Tale Signs will be released October 7, 2008, the eighth installment of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series.

The two-CD set contains unreleased studio recordings, demos, alternate takes, live tracks and rarities spanning 1989 to 2006.

A third 12-track disc is part of a limited-edition deluxe set in a hardcover slipcase with a book with photos of all of Dylan's singles. The 27-song version also will be issued in a limited-edition four-LP set.

"When Most of the Time came out on Oh Mercy, I thought it was such an achingly beautiful love song," says Steve Berkowitz, senior vice president of A&R at Columbia/Legacy. "Now it's here as a folk version and something that sounds like Dylan with Brian Eno and The Edge. To hear the way the songs and lyrics develop is fascinating. Dylan comes across as a folk singer, a blues musician and a jazz artist."

Dignity appears as a truncated piano demo and in twangy rockabilly form. Series of Dreams undergoes a rewrite. Twin renditions of the bluesy Marchin' to the City serve as blueprints for 'Til I Fell in Love With You.

There is also Red River Shore and Can't Escape From You, written for a film but never used. Miss the Mississippi was rescued from a long-shelved album with David Bromberg, and 32-20 Blues marks Dylan's only release of a Robert Johnson cover.

Among the rarities are the live The Girl on the Greenbriar Shore, eight-minute 'Cross the Green Mountain, The Lonesome River duet with Ralph Stanley and Ring Them Bells from Dylan's storied 1993 stint at the Supper Club in Manhattan. Those performances were filmed but never released.

"The songs and performances are of such strength and diversity, they will appeal to new fans and longtime fans," Berkowitz says, predicting the two-CD set will satisfy most appetites. "For some fans, there's never enough."

Rock Revival’s Time Capsule: Dylan’s First Major Concert, April 12 1963

By 1963, Bob Dylan, folk singer and growing civil rights activist, was outgrowing his place in Greenwich Vilage, New York. In April, 23 he performed his first major concert at the Town Hall, on a Friday night, playing ‘Hard Rain’, John Brown’ and the mind-blowing poem, 'Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie'. He had never performed a poem on stage before and has never since.

This served as kind of eulogy to his hero, although he wasn’t to die until 1967, a tribute to the man who has brought him to New York, not just physically (Dylan came to visit him regularly in hospital where he was dying), but musically, given Woody’s position as one of America’s greatest folk singer to that date.

Here is his introduction to the poem:

'There's this book coming out and they asked me to write, uh, something about Woody. Sorta like "What does Woody Guthrie Mean to You" in 25 words. And, uh, I couldn't do it, I wrote out five pages and, uh...I have it here, its a...I have it here by accident, actually. B-but I-I'd like to say this out loud. So, uh...if you could sorta roll along with this thing here, this is called Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie. '

Eric Clapton talks about this performance:

'He's a poet. Basically he's a poet. He does not trust his voice. He doesn't trust his guitar playing. He doesn't think he's good at anything, except writing—and even then he has self-doubts. Have you heard that thing he wrote about Woody Guthrie? That to me is the sum of his life's work so far. Whatever happens, that is it. That sums it up. '

The poem is very long, like an Allan Ginsberg, but here is the phenomenal last stanza.

No but that ain't yer game, it ain't even yer race

You can't hear yer name, you can't see yer face

You gotta look some other place

And where do you look for this hope that yer seekin

'Where do you look for this lamp that's a-burnin

'Where do you look for this oil well gushin'Where do you look for this candle that's glowin

'Where do you look for this hope that you know is there

And out there somewhere

And your feet can only walk down two kinds of roads

Your eyes can only look through two kinds of windows

Your nose can only smell two kinds of hallways

You can touch and twistAnd turn two kinds of doorknobs

You can either go to the church of your choice

Or you can go to Brooklyn State Hospital

You'll find God in the church of your choice

You'll find Woody Guthrie in Brooklyn State Hospital

And though it's only my opinionI may be right or wrong

You'll find them bothIn the Grand Canyon

At sundown

Bob Dylan Murder Mystery ? Blood on the Tracks

Tom Grasty's new novel takes the Dylan obsession one step further, a murder mystery based on the death of Bob Dorian, investigated by Jack Frost, with all the suspects being characters in Dylan's songs. Tom seems to be a one man publicity machine, even making it to the humble Rock Revival to spruik the book. If your a Dylan fan it should be fun.....

The Best of Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour

I dont know if everyone knows this, but Bob Dylan has been presenting his own radio show, Theme Time Radio Hour (TTRH), on the Deep Tracks channel of XM Satellite Radio for over two years now (also on BBC 2 radio in the UK)

It mainly features music that influenced Dylan from the 30's to the 50's, including blues, rockabilly, soul, gospel, swing and folk. Each show is centred around a theme, eg: weather, drinking, baseball, coffee, etc. It's obscure but an incredible insight, not only into Dylan, but into the American music that serves as the roots of rock.
