The Many Faces of Marc Bolan ! From Mod to Nutbush City Limits

Marc Bolan was a man of many moods, initially prancing about as a mod (he was even in a TV commercial as one), then a member of proto-punk band John's Children, then a quick visit to Paris where he claimed to have visited a wizard who taught him how to levitate, all before the age of 21.

The big question is which of his two more popular incarnations do you like the best ?

Tyrannosaurus Rex, a psychedelic-folk rock acoustic duo, with Steve Peregrin Took (named by Bolan who lived Tolkien) OR Trex, glam rock mega-band, responsible eventually for all the ills of Chinnichap ?

Tyrannosaurus Rex released three albums in folk mode, including the brilliant Prophets, Seers and Sages (1968), live from the forest with Bolan cast as some sort of musical elf

T. Rex was born in 1970, where he transmuted into the glitter wearing rock and roll star (it seems he noticed the glitter on his wife's dressing table prior to a photo session and just casually daubed some on his face).

This band lasted to 1973, in '74 he actually played guitar for Ike and Tina Turner, playing on the tragic Nutbush City Limits

Then 3 years in the US; fat, addicted to cocaine, releasing some pretty good eccentric solo albums; then dead before thirty,in a car crash just after touring with the Damned, of all people (he never learned to drive himself fearing premature death, poor bugger).

I liked the TRex era and was taken in by Marc's mysterious ways and boyish yet punky glam looks. I wonder what would have become of him if he had lived....he probably would have died of a drug or alchohol related incident, seems he was headed down that path with many others. In a way its amazing there are so many that survived the lifestyle.
