Before They Were Stars ? The Ten Best Bands That Never (Quite) Made It To The Top

http://www.deep-purple.it/contenuti/discografia/gillan/the_roots_of_DP.jpg

One of the great ways of discovering lesser known bands of the 60's and 70's is to track backwards from the really famous bands and find out what artists were doing before hand.

1 Elf

Ronnie James Dio's honky tonk blues-rock band before Rainbow, Sabbath and Dio

2 Humble Pie

Home of Peter frampton before that album, better, funkier, harder than anything he ever did solo (and I like that album)

3 The Move

Roy Wood's band before the creation of classical-pop band ELO, originally bubble-gum psych but went very heavy

4 Atomic Rooster

The incredible sound of Carl Palmer's band before ELP, hammond-infested prog at it's best

5 The James Gang

Joe Walsh before the Eagles, arguably better than the Eagles if you love hard rock

6 Black Cat Bones

Classic blues-rock from Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke formed Free

7 The Nice

The seminal British prog band that heralded the coming of Keith Emerson

8 Taste

Vehicle for the great Rory Gallagher before he showed Eric who God really was !

9 Energy

The first vehicle for Tommy Bolin, in jazz-rock mode before Spectrum, before Deep Purple, before Teaser and his untimely death

10 Episode Six

Home of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover before Deep Purple

Ha, love the Rory Gallagher story. Eric who? Rumour has it that after Taste played at the Isle Of Wight in 1970, Jimi Hendrix (who was also on the bill) was asked by a reporter what it felt like to be the best guitarist in the world, to which Jimi replied, "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher."
