In Flames is a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden and is considered to be a pioneer of the melodic death metal genre, along with Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates, and Carcass.

The Jester Race was their second album and the first featuring Anders Fridén on vocals, before that the band had only used session vocalists.

It's considered a classic of the 'Gothenberg style": In other words the dual guitar leads, growled vocals and acoustic sections. The Jester Race pulls off the incredible feat of being one of In Flames's darkest albums and their most melodic. The other great thing about this album (and In Flames generally) is that while it has clear death metal influences the themes are not all about evil (ie: In Flames arent pretending to be either mad or bad). It's introspecitive, intelligent, etc.

The album was reissued in 2002 along with their second EP, "Black-Ash Inheritance"

Highly recommended
