Dream Theatre are one of a handful of contemporary prog bands who can stand up against the quality of Yes, Rush, King Crimson, etc. They are massively popular in the US having been together for more than twenty years and releasing no less than 15 albums. If you like your prog sophisticated and Heavy try them out.
Dream Theatre are also known for the quality of their live shows, never playing the same set list twice, maintaining the incredible virtousity and complexity that is the hallmark of prog and playing for three hours with no intermission or opening act.

I saw Dream Theater live with Joe Satriani and King's X back in 2002 in Cleveland, OH. They put on a great show and even played their 40+ minute epic Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Mike Portnoy is one of the best drummers EVER and some may call this sacrilege but I'd put him up there with John Bonham and Keith Moon!
